If the movie “Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome” had a love affair with a Dave and Buster’s, their offspring might be Rex Baron, a new post-apocalyptic-themed restaurant at Town Center at Boca Raton.
What’s so appetizing about Armageddon? The restaurant and video-game bar, scheduled to debut Oct. 16, is branded on its website as an “interactive … dining haven where the art of food meets the art of survival,” where dining patrons — known as “survivors” — must cook their hamburgers and steaks on lava rocks heated to 650 degrees. Before and after dinner, patrons — sorry, survivors — can play interactive virtual-reality games in lounges equipped with expensive VR helmets while sipping booze from Army surplus IV bags.
The man responsible for making the end of the world classy enough for Boca Raton is co-owner Michael Norris, a hospitality industry vet and one of six Rex Baron investors. The 8,500-square-foot Rex Baron — short for “Restaurant Entertainment Xperience” — is owned by Rex Gryphon restaurant group, which opened a sister post-apocalyptic eatery called Mad Rex in Philadelphia in 2017.
